Womens cross-country skiing World Cup started today in Ruka with classical style sprint race.

Todays winner was Stina Nilsson from Sweden, who won the same competition also last year. Second was Sadie Bjornsen from the United States 0,24 seconds behind the winner. Third was Russian Julia Belorukova losing 0,91 seconds to the race winner.

“The key today was to keep calm and not go too hard on the first uphill. It was also important to save same energy during the race, because the last part of the track is very tough”, Nilsson said in media meeting after competition

“Season has started really, really well. I just have keep going like this.”

Sprint qualification was on the whole very surprising. After only few athletes it started snowing, which affected most on the Norwegian team. For example the winner of the sprint overall World Cup last season,  Maiken Caspersen FallaMarit Björgen and Heidi Weng didn’t get through from the qualification round.

Womens cross-country season will continue tomorrow with 10 kilometres classical style race.
