Akito Watabe from Japan won the second Nordic Combined World Cup competition in Ruka.

Watabe was on the lead already after ski jumping, and managed to hold his contenders behind him on a challenging Ruka ski tracks. For the joy of Finnish audience, Eero Hirvonen beat Germany’s Johannes Rydzek with 1,1 seconds.

Watabe told that he fought the whole time against pain. Watabe fell down while skiing earlier in the week and hurt his ribs to an ice block that was laying under the snow.

”I was fighting with the pain today, from training accident. It seems that a big group was chasing me, but I was just focusing my own rhythm and the pain on my chest.”

Nordic Combined continues with the third Ruka Tour competition on Sunday at 11:45.
