Ruka Nordic opens the Nordic combined World Cup again. Jarl Magnus Riiber, who sovereignly ruled the World Cup last season, will start the competition as front runner. Can anyone challenge the Norwegian?

Ruka offers both the highest hill and one of the most challenging ski trails for the competitors.
Ruka has been part of the Nordic combined race calendar since 2002, and this is the eighteenth season when Ruka is hosting the opening of the World cup.

During this weekend the Nordic Combined will take place in a Ruka tour which contains three competitions. There are competitions each day from Friday to Sunday, and in all the competitions, the athletes jump one round from the hill. On Friday, they are skiing 5km, and on Saturday & Sunday 10km. All athletes can participate in the competition on Fridays, but on Saturday and Sunday the competitors will be entered based on Friday’s results.

The World cup points will be shared normally from all the partial races. The athlete with the most points over the weekend will win the Ruka Tour and 15,000 Swiss francs prize pot.

Last year the races were feast for the Norwegians at the Ruka. The World Cup winner Jarl Magnus Riiber won all three partial races, which makes him also the biggest front runner this year. Joergen Graabakil, who achieved second place last year in both Ruka and in the World cup, is expected to challenge last year’s winner.

The toughest challengers for the Norwegian team are expected to be Fabian Riessle from Germany and last season’s World Cup number three Vinzenz Geiger, who came second last year in Ruka. Japan’s Akito Watabe is also someone to watch out for.

As for the Finns, eyes turn to Ilkka Herola as well as to Eero Hirvonen. Herola was the best Finnish competitor at Ruka last year, placing 18th. Finland’s latest prize places in Nordic Combined at Ruka are from 2017, when Hirvonen was second and third in the competitions.
