Ski Jumping World Cup continues this weekend as part of Ruka Nordic in the beautiful winter sports centre in Kuusamo, Finland. The Qualifying Round will take place on Friday and two individual competitions on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. This year’s event will be held without spectators due to the current situation.

German Markus Eisenbichler is one of the favourites for the competition, as he claimed his second career World Cup victory in Wisła, Poland last weekend. A four-time gold medalist at the World Championships, Eisenbichler dominated last year’s event in Seefeld where he got three golds.

His compatriot, Karl Geiger as well as Austrian Daniel Huber also reached the podium in Wisła. However, Huber and the rest of the Austrian team had to opt out of this weekend’s competition and send in their B-team after some members of the team tested positive for COVID-19. The Russian jumpers had to skip this year’s Ruka World Cup altogether for the same reason.

Last year’s Ruka Nordic champion, Norwegian Daniel-André Tande is eager to improve results from last weekend, when he finished 36th. Japan’s Ryoyu Kobayashi took back-to-back wins in individual competition in Ruka two years ago, when he tied the hill record at 147.5 metres. His most recent performance leaves room for improvement however, after he finished at 27th place on the opening leg of the World Cup in Poland.

Finnish Ski Jumping team makes a comeback to international competition after nine months of absence. Team Finland last competed in March and didn’t participate in the World Cup opening in Wisła last weekend.

Hired earlier this year, head coach of Finland Janne Väätäinen had also held the office from 2008 to 2010. His team consists of eight jumpers with a median age of only 21.5. Among them, 20-year-old Niko Kytösaho was the best Finnish jumper in last year’s Ruka Nordic when he finished 24th.
